Seeing the northern lights in Lapland takes two things: aurora activity and a clear sky. The aurora is often there — the clouds are what stand in the way. That is why every northern lights hunt starts with the cloud maps and the aurora forecast, and why we are ready to move.
Your guide lives here, knows the roads, the lakes and the open fells, and knows where the sky tends to break open. When we find a clear spot, we stop, let your eyes adjust to the dark and wait for the sky to move.

Where can I book a northern lights tour with Light Hunters Lapland?
We run northern lights hunts from three places in Finnish Lapland: Ylläs, Levi and Rovaniemi. Guests in Ylläs and Levi are picked up from their accommodation, and Rovaniemi guests from the city area. From Rovaniemi we also run a winter day hike to Riisitunturi National Park.
When is the northern lights season in Lapland?
The aurora season in Lapland runs from late August to early April, when the nights are dark enough. The lights themselves are there all year; what we need is darkness and a clear sky. Autumn and March are often the most comfortable months, but a clear night in mid-winter is just as good.
What does “hunting” the northern lights mean?
We do not park in one spot and hope. Before and during the tour we follow the cloud cover and the aurora forecast, and we drive to where the sky is clearest. Some nights that is close by, some nights it takes longer.
How does the guarantee work?
Every northern lights hunt comes with our guarantee: if you do not see the aurora on your tour, you get your money back — a full refund to the payment method you used. It applies to every hunt from Ylläs, Levi and Rovaniemi. Booking via WhatsApp? Pay after the tour, only when the aurora has been seen. We are confident because we do not wait in one spot — we drive to the clear sky, and well over 95% of our guests see the lights.
How long does the northern lights hunt take?
Between 4 and 10 hours, usually 5–6 hours. We do not turn back at a fixed time — we drive to wherever the sky is clear.
Are photos included?
Yes. Professional aurora photography is included in the price: your guide photographs you under the northern lights with a professional camera.
What should I wear?
Dress in layers: wool or thermal base layer, a warm middle layer, a windproof jacket and trousers, a hat, mittens and warm winter boots. Lapland nights can drop well below −20 °C in mid-winter.
