Riisitunturi National Park is where Lapland’s winter turns into art. Frost and snow build up on the spruces for months until whole forests stand like white sculptures — the Finns call it tykky, crown snow. Where is Riisitunturi National Park?
Riisitunturi is in Posio, in southern Lapland, about two hours’ drive south-east of Rovaniemi. The park is famous for its hillside mires and, in winter, for its snow-crowned trees.
What is crown snow (tykky)?
In Finnish it is called tykky: layers of frost and snow that build up on the trees during the winter until the spruces look like white sculptures. Riisitunturi is one of the best places in Finland to see it, usually from about January to March.
How hard is the Riisitunturi hike?
The hike follows marked trails and the climb to the fell top is gentle. You do not need hiking experience, but you should be able to walk a few hours in snow. We adapt the pace to the group.
Can we see the northern lights on this tour?
